چکیده

Abstract We report results from new and archival observations of the newly discovered active asteroid (248370) 2005 QN 173 (also now designated Comet 433P), which has been determined to be a likely main-belt comet based on subsequent discovery that it is recurrently near perihelion. From data analysis, we estimate g ? -, $r^{\prime} r $i^{\prime} i $z^{\prime} z -band absolute magnitudes for nucleus H g = 16.62 ± 0.13, r 16.12 0.10, i 16.05 0.11, z 15.93 0.08, corresponding colors -r^{\prime} =0.50\pm 0.16$?> ? = 0.50 ± 0.16 , -i^{\prime} =0.07\pm 0.15$?> 0.07 0.15 -z^{\prime} =0.12\pm 0.14$?> 0.12 0.14 ; an equivalent V magnitude 16.32 0.08; radius n 1.6 0.2 km (using albedo p 0.054 0.012). Meanwhile, find mean near-nucleus coma when 248370 =0.47\pm 0.03$?> 0.47 0.03 =0.10\pm 0.04$?> 0.10 0.04 =0.05\pm 0.05$?> 0.05 similar dust tail colors, suggesting no significant gas present. approximate ratios between scattering cross sections (within 5000 nucleus) A d / 0.7 0.3 2016 July 22 1.8 < 2.9 in 2021 August. During observation period, declined intrinsic brightness by ?0.35 mag (or ?25%) 37 days, while surface remained effectively constant over same period. Constraints derived sunward extent width as measured perpendicular orbit plane suggest terminal velocities ejected grains are extremely slow (?1 m s ?1 1 ? particles), observed emission may aided rapid rotation lowering effective escape velocity.

Physical Properties of Main - Belt Comet P / 2005 U 1 ( Read ) ∗

The main-belt comets occupy dynamically asteroidal orbits in the main asteroid belt. Here we present physical observations of the second-known member of this population, P/2005 U1 (Read), which showed vigorous cometary activity from 2005 October 24 to 2005 December 27. Monte Carlo numerical simulations of P/Read’s dust emission indicate that the coma and tail are optically dominated by dust par...

The Castalia mission to Main Belt Comet 133P/Elst-Pizarro

We describe Castalia, a proposed mission to rendezvous with a Main Belt Comet (MBC), 133P/Elst-Pizarro. MBCs are a recently discovered population of apparently icy bodies within the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, which may represent the remnants of the population which supplied the early Earth with water. Castalia will perform the first exploration of this population by characteri...

Main - Belt Comet P / 2008 R 1 ( Garradd ) 1

We present a study of the newly-discovered main-belt comet P/2008 R1 (Garradd), an object with the dynamical characteristics of an asteroid and the physical characteristics of a comet. Photometry sets a limit to the effective radius of the nucleus at re < 0.7 km (red geometric albedo 0.05 assumed). The coma shows a secular fading in our data caused by the escape of dust particles from the near-...

X-shooter search for outgassing from Main Belt Comet P/2012 T1 (Pan-STARRS)

Context. Main Belt Comets are a recently identified population of minor bodies with stable asteroid-like orbits but cometary appearances. Sublimation of water ice is the most likely mechanism for their recurrent activity (i.e. dust tails and dust comae), although there has been no direct detection of gas. These peculiar objects could hold the key to the origin of water on Earth. Aims. In this p...

The Hawaii trails project: comet-hunting in the main asteroid belt

Context. The mysterious solar system object 133P/(7968) Elst-Pizarro is dynamically asteroidal, yet displays recurrent comet-like dust emission. Two scenarios were hypothesized to explain this unusual behavior: (1) 133P is a classical comet from the outer solar system that has evolved onto a main-belt orbit, or (2) 133P is a dynamically ordinary main-belt asteroid on which subsurface ice has re...
